Direct Actions for Union Freedoms [Update 12.6.10]
On June 10th the trial for union freedoms in Germany goes into the second round. Leading up to the trial, unions and active workers around the world will take action. This court case is not only about the FAU Berlin calling itself a union, it's about whether grassroots unions can exist in Germany. In this article we will collect reports of the actions against the de-facto prohibition of the FAU Berlin and solidarity with the struggle of the workers at the Babylon Mitte cinema for better working conditions.
Amsterdam - June 10th
The Vrije Bond (Free Union) held a picket in front of the German consulate in Amsterdam. Armed with a banner, a megaphone and 2 red/black flags, they held a speech and handed out leaflets.
Two police officers were called by the consul to guard the consulate. He also refused to let the protestors give him a leaflet. In the end, the police officers were talked into going into the consulate and give the consul the leaflet.
The Consul General of Germany, Dr. Horst Freitag, held a talk at the Union League to the German-American Chamber of Commerce. The IWW Philadelphia didn't want to miss the chance to inform the visitors about the court actions faced by the FAU Berlin in Germany. They handed out leaflets and spoke to those attending the event. Nearly a dozen cops had to protect the Union League from the fearsome Wobblies. The building in downtown Philadelphia is the stomping ground of the upper crust who frown at protests at their doorsteps.
Vilnius - June 7th
SAMPRO -- the Employee Union, progressive grassroots labor movement, together with the New Left'95 movement, anarchists and the Spiritual workers movement, met at the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, Vilnius, to protest against the violations of the workers' rights in Germany. The Berlin Regional Court has decided that the FAU Berlin can no longer call itself a „union" or a „grassroots union"; this means injury for German workers, and we cannot leave them alone, insofar as due to crisis the capitalists try to break down all the labour struggle. FAU helped and consulted SAMPRO in its struggle against the employers one year ago, and now it is our turn to express solidarity for German fellow workers.
In the meeting we called this action of the German government shameful and undersigned a petition for German government.
Warsaw - May 19th
Despite the rain, March 19 there was an anti-repression action in the center of Warsaw. The action was held to draw public attention to various types of repression against political activists, protestors, workers and unionists and in particular to cases related to our comrades.
Some speeches were made and leaflets given out about cases of repression against workers' activists from the FAU, CNT, and ZSP. Here are some more pictures
Madrid - May 12th
Members of the Education Syndicate of the CNT-E call for union freedoms for the FAU in front of an exhibit of the German language at the university, which was attended by the German Ambassador.
